On Friday’s episode of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher criticized Democrats for not renouncing their far-left policies, calling it a significant disadvantage for the party in the upcoming election.
Democrats ‘Still Not Renouncing Far Left’
Maher stated, “Democrats, still, really, are not renouncing their far left.” He argued that the only advantage Republicans have in the election, aside from alleged election irregularities, is the Democratic Party’s continued alignment with far-left ideologies.
Maher also labeled the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as Communist, and pointed out that Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) was the only elected official who supported government ownership of the means of production, a stance he agreed with.
Beshear Defends Democratic Values
Beshear responded by stating that socialism is a failed experiment but added that he is open to working with anyone who wants to solve problems. He emphasized that while he and DSA candidates may have different approaches, both aim to ensure people can access healthcare. He criticized Maher for being a “problem causer” rather than a “problem solver.”
Maher then suggested that the Democratic Party should be more open to allowing members to form their own parties if they disagree with the party’s direction, stating, “I would love to hear somebody say, you are not the Democratic Party. You are free to do this, but you should take it somewhere else and be your own party.”
Both Praise San Francisco Mayor
Despite their ideological differences, both Maher and Beshear praised San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, indicating some level of mutual respect, even in the face of political disagreement.
The exchange highlighted the growing divide between more moderate Democrats and the far-left wing of the party, with Maher suggesting the party’s alignment with radical policies is hurting its electoral prospects.
