A nonpartisan election integrity group has released a new guide to help voters understand how their midterm ballot may impact future election rules. The Honest Elections Project (HEP) launched a comprehensive ballot measure guide, highlighting key election-related proposals across the country. This resource aims to inform voters about the potential long-term effects of their choices on the electoral system.
Ballot Measures Affecting Election Rules
The guide outlines 21 different measures across 17 states, covering a range of issues such as voter ID requirements, partisan gerrymandering, and alternative voting systems. Jason Snead, Executive Director of HEP Action, emphasized that the rules for the 2028 presidential election are already on the ballot in several states. He noted that voters are not just selecting officials but also shaping the framework for future elections.
Among the measures, ten focus on voter ID and citizenship, with several states proposing requirements for voters to present a government ID or prove U.S. citizenship. Additionally, five measures address how voting rules can be changed, including a proposal in Colorado to require ballot questions to be written in plain language at an 8th-grade reading level. In North and South Dakota, a measure seeks to mandate a 60 percent supermajority to amend the state constitution.
Other Key Measures
The guide also highlights measures related to voter registration and restoration, ranked-choice voting, and congressional redistricting. These proposals could significantly influence how elections are conducted in the future. Snead noted that the outcomes of these measures will have lasting impacts beyond the current election cycle.
HEP advocates for several key issues, including ending foreign dark money in elections, preserving the electoral college, and stopping vote harvesting. The organization’s mission is to ensure that every lawful ballot is counted and that the electoral system is secure against fraud. They stress that preserving the integrity of democracy should be a nonpartisan priority.
Snead also wrote an op-ed for the Daily Caller News Foundation, stating that Americans have two more years to debate who should win the next presidential election but only a week to decide who will set the rules. This underscores the significance of the upcoming midterm elections in shaping the political landscape for years to come.
