Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a sharp critique of the United Nations during a speech at the organization’s headquarters, calling it a ‘useless organization that only serves to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.’ Milei accused the UN of failing in its mission to promote peace, freedom, and human rights, citing issues such as the gender agenda, environmental extremism, and unchecked immigration as examples of its growing dysfunction.
UN’s role in global crises
Milei highlighted the UN’s role in global crises, including the pandemic, where he argued that the organization prioritized political agendas over scientific evidence and national sovereignty. He accused the UN of promoting ‘forced lockdown policies’ worldwide, which he claimed led to millions of avoidable deaths and called a ‘genocide’ in disguise. He also criticized the UN for failing to address international terrorism, human rights abuses, and the persecution of Christians in Africa.
Malvinas Islands dispute
Milei brought up the long-standing dispute over the Malvinas Islands, noting that the UN’s Resolution 3149 from 1971 had not led to any real progress. He criticized the UN’s inability to enforce its own resolutions, pointing out that the ‘Sea Lion project’ is moving forward with oil extraction in the North Malvinas Basin under British licenses that Argentina rejects as illegal.
U.S. economic agreement
Despite his criticism of the UN, Milei announced a major economic agreement with the United States, signing the Andes-Atlantic Corridor initiative. The project aims to strengthen infrastructure linking Argentina’s economic sectors to major Atlantic ports and Western markets, promoting exports of minerals, oil, and gas, and creating a Western Hemisphere supply chain hedge. The U.S. State Department emphasized the initiative’s potential to unlock billions of dollars in investment and expand opportunities for American companies.
Support for AI and Western alignment
Milei also expressed support for artificial intelligence, calling it a ‘frontier’ rather than a threat, and aligned Argentina with the West, the United States, and Israel. He opposed state control of AI, echoing Donald Trump’s views on the technology. His speech concluded with his trademark slogan, ‘¡Viva la libertad, carajo!’ or ‘Long live freedom, dammit.’
