Peggy Flanagan, the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, has vowed to dismantle Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and replace it with an immigration system rooted in public safety, dignity, and due process. Flanagan, who won the Democratic nomination for Minnesota’s Senate seat, made the pledge during her victory speech after defeating former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya.

Flanagan’s Anti-ICE Stance

Flanagan, now the state’s senator-elect, criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, calling them a threat to Minnesotans. During her speech, she stated, “Minnesotans had rejected what she called President Donald Trump’s ‘masked goons shooting our neighbors and terrorizing our communities.’” She continued, “We will rip ICE apart. That’s right. And we have the opportunity to replace it with an immigration system that is grounded in public safety for everybody, dignity and due process.”

Flanagan has consistently referred to ICE as “out of control” and “Donald Trump’s private police force.” Her campaign has also highlighted the deaths of anti-ICE agitators Renee Good and Alex Pretti, making them a central part of her message. In an August post on X, she wrote, “In the Senate, I’m not going to send one more penny to this lawless, out-of-control agency. Let’s rip ICE apart.”

Flanagan’s platform includes pledges to end the war in Iran, pass Medicare for All, and oppose the Trump administration’s policies. Her victory marks a significant shift in Minnesota’s political landscape, as Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of Congress.
