Nebraska Senate Race Hinges on Democratic Election Strategy
Democrats’ unconventional tactics in Nebraska could shift a deep-red Senate seat.

OMAHA, Nebraska — As Republicans battle to retain their Senate majority, the race in Nebraska has become a focal point of political intrigue. Senator Pete Ricketts (R), who holds a narrow lead over his opponent, faces an unexpected challenge as Democrats employed a controversial strategy to reshape the race.
A Strategic Move by Democrats
The Democrat nominee, Cindy Burbank, withdrew from the race shortly after winning the May primary, leaving Ricketts to face Dan Osborn, an independent candidate who effectively runs as a Democrat. This move was orchestrated with the support of the Nebraska Democratic Party, which endorsed Osborn despite Burbank’s withdrawal.
Burbank had publicly announced her plan to withdraw, according to Republican Secretary of State Bob Evnen, who removed her from the primary ballot for running in “good faith.” Burbank attempted to reinstate herself but lost in court before eventually winning on appeal due to procedural errors.
Controversies and Allegations
Despite the Democrats’ refusal to replace Burbank in the general election, the party faced accusations of orchestrating a scheme to undermine their own nominee. William Forbes, the second-place finisher in the primary, argued the party should have replaced Burbank, but a judge dismissed his claim, labeling him a Republican counter-plant.
Osborn, a union organizer with a controversial past, has been linked to similar tactics in the past. His campaign has been marked by questionable statements, including mocking rural voters and making racist and sexist remarks. His daughter is also tied to online sex work, and she was paid by his campaign.
Political Implications
Osborn’s claim to caucus with neither party in the Senate is seen as a ploy by Republicans, who argue that such a position would render him powerless to influence policy. The current Senate independents, Bernie Sanders and Angus King, caucus with Democrats and have significant committee assignments.
Ricketts, a former governor who was appointed to the seat in 2023, faces a pivotal race that could shift the balance of power in the Senate. If the Democrats succeed, it would mark the first time a Nebraska Senate seat has been lost to them in two decades.
