Newsom Denies Pressuring AG Over Paramount Merger Settlement

California Governor Gavin Newsom has denied claims that he pressured the state’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, to drop his lawsuit against Paramount Pictures and its merger with Warner Bros Discovery. Newsom is responding to growing criticism from left-wing Democrats who accuse him of influencing Bonta’s decision.

On Monday, it was revealed that Bonta had settled his lawsuit, which aimed to block the merger. The settlement reportedly included concessions from Paramount to keep the studio in California, prompting backlash from liberal critics. Many accused Bonta of being a coward, while others pointed fingers at Newsom for allegedly pressuring him to abandon the legal action.

Newsom addressed the accusations in an interview with Axios, stating, “I didn’t pressure anybody.” He emphasized that he had consistently advocated for resolving the merger issue at the corporate level rather than through litigation. “I made the point. I’ve made it very publicly and consistently,” he said, adding that Bonta’s decision to focus on the boardroom was a strategic move that benefited California.

Despite the settlement, Bonta has expressed reservations about the merger, claiming that the concessions he secured are significant, but he still opposes the deal. However, the left remains concerned that the merger’s path has been cleared, with some fearing that Paramount’s leadership could influence cable news networks after the merger.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a far-left Democrat, has also criticized the settlement, calling it a “disastrous outcome.” She warned that allowing a “Trump-aligned, foreign-owned conglomerate” to dominate American news and entertainment would lead to higher prices, fewer jobs, and a concentration of power among billionaires.

Warren’s comments highlight the growing political tension surrounding the merger, with critics arguing that the deal undermines antitrust protections and threatens media independence. As the merger moves forward, the debate over corporate influence and media control continues to intensify.
