The Obama Foundation is facing scrutiny over significant income inequality, with top executives earning six-figure salaries while lower-paid workers push for union representation, according to a new report.

High Salaries Amid Construction Costs

The report, published by Fox News Digital, highlights that CEO Valerie Jarrett earns $771,000 annually, with several other executives in the half-a-million-dollar range. Nearly 200 employees at the foundation are reported to be earning six-figure salaries, despite the organization having 342 total employees. The foundation’s 2025 tax filing shows that 172 employees received more than $100,000 in salary.

The controversy arises as the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, which was initially estimated to cost around $333 million, now has a price tag of $1 billion — nearly triple the original estimate. The foundation claims its construction and operational costs are funded by private donations and revenues, though some infrastructure improvements were funded by taxpayers.

Unionization Efforts and Criticism

Workers at the foundation have expressed concerns about deteriorating working conditions, rolled-back benefits, and heavy workloads, leading to a push for unionization. A public letter from rank-and-file employees described the challenges they face, including minimal support from leadership and increased responsibilities due to staff departures.

Republicans have also criticized the foundation’s financial practices, with Illinois Republican Party Chairman Bob Grogan calling it a ‘far-left political operation’ that uses taxpayer money to enrich Obama’s inner circle.

Comparisons to Other Presidential Foundations

The report notes that the Obama Foundation is an outlier compared to other presidential foundations, such as those of former presidents Jimmy Carter through George W. Bush. The percentage of employees earning over $100,000 was significantly higher at the Obama Foundation, with only George W. Bush’s foundation coming close at 37 percent.

Experts suggest that the foundation’s heavy reliance on high-level expertise and think tank activities may explain the higher salaries, but the disparity remains a point of contention.
