Oil prices dropped sharply following the pivotal midterm elections that saw sweeping Democratic victories across multiple states, including key battleground races. On Wednesday, crude oil prices fell by approximately $8 per barrel from the previous day, currently standing at $88 per barrel, according to Trading Economics. This marks a total decline of about $16 from October 30, when prices reached $104 per barrel.
Democrats Gain Control of Congress
The significant drop in oil prices came after Tuesday’s elections, which saw Democrats secure control of both the House and the Senate by January. The results showed at least seven seats flipped to Democratic candidates in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maine. Alaska and Mississippi remain tightly contested as votes continue to be tallied.
Vance Blames Iran for GOP Losses
Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican losses in the midterms to the ongoing conflict in Iran. “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance stated. He emphasized that any honest discussion about the future must begin with addressing the war.
Analysts Link Price Drop to Election Outlook
Ben Cahill, a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council, linked the crude price drop to the U.S. election and the belief that President Donald Trump would de-escalate tensions with Iran. “JD Vance’s statement amplified that sentiment,” Cahill noted.
War Powers Resolutions and Market Reactions
Since the start of the U.S. military campaign against Iran on February 28, several War Powers Resolutions have been introduced in Congress to limit the operation. The dip in oil prices also coincided with President Trump’s announcement that stock market numbers had risen “through the roof” on Wednesday.
