Pro-Trump Billionaire Halts Senate Donations Over SAVE Act Failure

Pro-Trump billionaire Timothy Mellon has suspended donations to Senate Republicans following the chamber’s failure to pass the SAVE America Act, according to The New York Times. The 84-year-old megadonor reportedly responded to a fundraising letter by stating his finances were closed, marking a significant blow to the Republican Senate leadership.

Mellon, who previously contributed $30 million to the Senate Leadership Fund in 2020, has now distanced himself from Senate Republicans. Despite efforts by allies of Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to arrange a meeting, the two have not connected, according to the report.

Mellon’s decision leaves Senate Republicans without a major benefactor as they prepare for the November elections. However, the billionaire continues to support other Republican groups, including the Congressional Leadership Fund, where he recently gave $20 million, though this contribution has not yet been reflected in federal filings.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters expressed confidence in the party’s prospects, stating, “Bet on us.” He highlighted the improved quality of candidates and increased resources available to Republicans. Gruters also emphasized the role of former President Donald Trump, calling him the party’s “secret weapon.”

Republicans hold a substantial cash advantage at the national level, with the RNC holding $130 million as of July, compared to the DNC’s $16 million. The National Republican Senatorial Committee also has $56 million, outpacing the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s $40 million.

Democrats are concerned about the GOP’s spending power, with a North Carolina strategist warning that the Republicans’ financial advantage could undermine their chances of winning control of Congress. The strategist noted that the GOP’s massive resources could offset a favorable political environment.
