Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been elected as the 47th governor of Arkansas, defeating Democrat Fred Love in a tightly contested race. With 419,174 votes, or 53% of the total, Sanders secured the victory, while Love received 300,182 votes, or 38%, according to the Associated Press. The race was called after 90% of the votes were counted.
Sanders, a Republican, currently serves as the governor of Arkansas and previously held the position of White House Press Secretary from 2017 to 2019. She entered public service after a long career in political campaign management and conservative strategy. Raised in Arkansas as the daughter of former Governor Mike Huckabee, Sanders has been a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape.
As governor, Sanders has focused on several key initiatives, including income tax reductions, educational reform under the LEARNS Act, public safety measures, and economic development. Her administration has emphasized these areas to improve the state’s overall conditions. She advanced to the general election after securing the Republican nomination unopposed.
Sanders received early endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who praised her work as governor on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump highlighted her ‘incredible job’ in leading Arkansas.
Love, the Democratic candidate, served in the Arkansas State Senate representing District 15 before his election in 2022. Prior to that, he spent twelve years in the Arkansas House of Representatives, representing Little Rock and surrounding areas. Outside of public office, Love has worked as a public administrator and community director, focusing on local housing and economic development programs.
His gubernatorial platform centered on public education funding, healthcare access expansion, economic relief for working families, and local community infrastructure investment. He won the Democratic primary in March and advanced to the general election.
