Democratic Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke during his son’s hockey game on Friday, according to his office. Murphy, 53, reported numbness in his arm during the contest and was taken to a local hospital, where he was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” said Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, in a statement.

Murphy is currently awake and alert, with doctors expressing optimism about his recovery. “The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt added.

Murphy, who is not up for reelection this year, has been traveling across the country to support Democratic candidates. He was expected to be in New Hampshire with Democratic Senate nominee Chris Pappas today.

His hospitalization has drawn attention to the broader issue of strokes among Senate Democrats. Three other senators have experienced strokes in recent years, including Sens. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who both recovered after their incidents in 2022. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman also had a stroke during his campaign and now uses adaptive technology in the Senate, such as live captioning on a phone or tablet.

Fetterman expressed support for Murphy on social media, stating, “My family is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery.” Several Republican senators, including Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, also offered prayers for Murphy’s recovery.

While Murphy’s condition remains a focus of concern, the broader political landscape continues to shift with key races and developments across the country.
