New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) addressed concerns about the state’s high cost of living during an interview on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.” When asked if Democrats winning Congress would make life more affordable in New Jersey, she emphasized the state’s efforts to lower costs, while criticizing federal policies that she claims are undermining those efforts.

State Initiatives to Combat High Costs

Sherrill highlighted several measures her administration has taken to address rising living expenses, including freezing rate hikes, expanding power generation to drive down energy costs, and developing a comprehensive housing plan. She mentioned that the state is already building 40,000 homes, many on state-owned land, to address housing shortages and reduce costs for residents.

“We’ve started to make real impact,” Sherrill said, noting a recent permitting press conference where she outlined progress in these initiatives. She argued that these efforts are helping to save families time and money, making New Jersey more affordable for its residents.

Federal Policies as a Major Obstacle

Despite these local efforts, Sherrill claimed that federal policies are working against the state’s progress. She pointed to the ongoing war and its impact on gas prices, as well as tariffs on Canadian lumber and other materials used in construction, as factors that increase costs for New Jersey families.

“For every step forward I take in the state, the federal government takes about ten steps back,” Sherrill said. She called for Democrats to take control of both the House and Senate to hold the current administration accountable and push for federal policies that reduce costs for families.

Call for Legislative Action

Sherrill emphasized the importance of federal collaboration, stating that without support from Congress, state efforts to make life more affordable will be limited. She framed the issue as a broader battle for affordable living, with federal policies playing a key role in either supporting or hindering state-level reforms.

Her comments reflect a growing concern among New Jersey residents, who continue to face high housing and living costs. While state initiatives are making progress, the political and economic landscape at the federal level remains a significant challenge for any long-term solutions.
