Talarico: Senate Filibuster Is Jim Crow Relic
Texas Senator-elect calls filibuster a ‘Jim Crow relic’ as Democrats gain Senate control.

Texas Senator-elect James Talarico has called the Senate filibuster a ‘Jim Crow relic’ and urged Democrats to abolish the rule when they take control of the chamber. Talarico, who defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the November election, endorsed the idea in an interview with NBC News correspondent Ryan Chandler.
Call for Ending Gridlock
Talarico argued that the filibuster, which is not part of the Constitution, has led to political gridlock and prevents elected majorities from governing effectively. He stated, ‘I believe that the majority has the right to govern in this country. The filibuster is leading to gridlock in our nation’s capital.’ He further claimed that removing the filibuster would allow Congress to address pressing issues such as the cost of groceries, gasoline, utilities, and health care.
Democrats’ Stance on Filibuster
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has not yet committed to eliminating the filibuster, focusing instead on reducing costs and working through the legislative process. ‘We are focused — the first thing we’re going to do is reduce people’s costs and work the legislative process,’ Schumer said when asked about the possibility of abolishing the filibuster.
Historical Context and Political Shifts
President Donald Trump had previously urged Republicans to abolish the filibuster during his time in office, claiming it would allow his party to pass legislation without Democratic cooperation. However, GOP leaders resisted these calls. Now that Democrats have taken control of the Senate, Trump’s warnings about what they might do are becoming a central question for the incoming majority.
Impact of Filibuster Reform
Eliminating the filibuster would not guarantee the passage of every Democratic proposal, as the party would still need to hold together its entire Senate majority and secure support in the House and from the president. However, it would remove one of the most significant procedural obstacles to passing legislation along party lines.
