James Talarico, the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee from Texas, has pledged to continue his support for transgender children in the Senate, according to an undercover video obtained by the Daily Wire. The video, captured at Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church on September 13, shows Talarico responding to a woman who asked whether he would defend her niece, who is transgender, and her ability to compete in women’s sports.
Talarico’s Commitment to Trans Youth
Talarico assured the woman that his position on transgender issues had not changed. “Always,” he said. “The way I fought for trans kids in the legislature is how I will fight for them in the U.S. Senate. And my position hasn’t changed.” He added that transgender sports eligibility should be handled locally and insisted his approach remained the broadest in the field.
Contradictions in Talarico’s Stance
The comments came four days after Talarico told Fox News on September 9 that he opposed transgender athletes in girls’ sports, stating that every sport must be “safe and fair.” He reiterated that he would oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it risks safety or fairness.
Shift in Messaging and Response
Jennifer Miranda, a manager with Texas Together and the Texas Democratic Party, characterized the shift as strategic, noting that Talarico was trying to appeal to a wider audience, including Republicans in Texas. Rev. Babs Miller, a minister at Talarico’s longtime Austin church, predicted that he would revert to his previous stance after the election.
Campaign and Opposition
Paxton campaign spokeswoman Madison Cercy claimed the footage confirmed Talarico’s record, stating that “James Talarico can’t outrun his own radical record, and this bombshell video proves it.” The footage follows separate undercover video obtained by Breitbart News showing Talarico’s pastor and mentor, Rev. Jim Rigby, welcoming atheists to his congregation. Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton in November.
