Former Oklahoma State Senator Mike Mazzei, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has been elected as the next governor of Oklahoma. Mazzei secured victory with 308,315 votes, or 52%, defeating Democratic candidate Cyndi Munson, who received 511,664 votes, or 45%.
Campaign Platform and Key Issues
Mazzei, a Republican, outlined six key issues on his campaign platform, including eliminating property tax for seniors and veterans aged 65 and older, protecting Oklahoma land from foreign ownership, and preparing Oklahoma students for real jobs. He also pledged to create more high-paying jobs, ensure government accountability, and protect the right to life from conception.
In education, Mazzei advocated for restoring parental transparency and prioritizing reading, math, and science in K-12 schools. He also promised to ‘end wokeism in higher education teacher programs’ and ‘tie higher compensation to performance’ for teachers. On the issue of abortion, his campaign stated, ‘Every human being has a right to life, and government has a duty to protect it. Mike opposes abortion in all circumstances.’
Democratic Candidate’s Stance
Cyndi Munson, the Democratic candidate, emphasized her efforts to combat extreme legislative measures, including the strictest abortion ban in the country, attacks on trans youth, and mandates for teaching Bibles in public schools. She also supported tribal sovereignty and promised to prioritize workforce development, public school funding, and better pay for teachers.
Munson argued that ‘every life is valued’ and pledged to support a state question to overturn Oklahoma’s extreme abortion ban and codify abortion access into the state constitution.
Next Governor and Transition
Mazzei will succeed term-limited Republican Governor Kevin Stitt, whose term ends in January. This marks a significant shift in Oklahoma’s leadership, with Mazzei’s policies reflecting a strong conservative stance on various social and economic issues.
