President Donald Trump accused Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) of using a false name to win her election and demanded she resign from Congress immediately, during a rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday.
Accusations of Fraud and Disqualification
Speaking at the rally, Trump cited a court filing by federal prosecutors that identified Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” which he claimed was her real name. He argued that her use of a false name to be sworn into Congress rendered her ineligible to serve, stating that she should be disqualified and resign.
“So it’s not looking good because she used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress,” Trump said.
Trump also instructed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to be informed that Omar’s seat had been “conceded” by the Democratic Party, as she had “openly admitted to fraud.” He emphasized that using a false name to be sworn in would likely prevent her from continuing to serve in Congress.
Attack on Omar’s Response to Brother Marriage Question
Trump further criticized Omar for her response to a question about whether she had married her brother. When asked, “Did you marry your brother?” Omar reportedly replied, “Not to my knowledge,” which Trump called one of the worst answers he had ever heard.
“That’s one of the worst answers I think I’ve ever heard. You know, I’ve heard some bad political answers. I could go over a lot of them, but that would be about the worst,” Trump said.
Ongoing Legal Dispute
The dispute over Omar’s name and eligibility is expected to continue for months, with charges, court hearings, and appeals likely to play a significant role in the legal process. The case has drawn widespread attention, with many observers noting the potential political and legal implications of the allegations.
As the situation unfolds, it remains unclear how the courts will rule on the validity of Omar’s name and the consequences of her actions. However, Trump’s public statements have clearly signaled his belief that she should be removed from Congress immediately.
