Trump Hosts Anthropic CEO After Months of Tensions

2 min read

President Donald Trump has invited Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to a private dinner at the White House, marking a potential thaw in relations after months of tension. The invitation, reportedly extended by Trump personally, follows Amodei’s absence from last week’s state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping due to a scheduling conflict. This one-on-one meeting is seen as a sign of improving relations between Anthropic and the Trump administration, which had previously expressed concerns over the company’s AI policies.

Contradictions in AI Regulation

Despite the invitation, tensions remain. David Sacks, Trump’s former AI czar, criticized Anthropic on his podcast, calling the company’s approach to AI development and regulation “corporate schizophrenia.” Sacks questioned how the company could pursue an IPO while its leadership warned of the technology’s potential to cause human extinction. He also highlighted the contradiction between Anthropic’s warnings about biological risks and its expansion into bio-related research.

Public and Private Reactions

Amodei has consistently called for government regulation of AI, even as the company continues to develop more advanced models. This stance has been satirized by Saturday Night Live, where Jane Wickline portrayed Amodei in a sketch questioning the ethics of AI development. The upcoming White House meeting with top AI executives is set to take place just days after the dinner with Amodei, as Republicans face growing pressure to regulate the industry ahead of the midterms.

Government and Pentagon Tensions

Anthropic has been in the spotlight with the Pentagon, which recently designated the company a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth accused Anthropic of trying to control military operations, leading to a ban on commercial activity with the company. Trump has also criticized Anthropic, calling it a “RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY” that endangers national security. Legal battles continue as the company challenges these designations in court.
