President Donald Trump praised Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) for her decision to endorse former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) over her fellow Democrat, Abdul El-Sayed, during a rally in Dubuque, Iowa. Trump highlighted Stevens’ ‘bravery’ in speaking out against El-Sayed, whom he labeled a ‘jihadist.’

Speaking to rallygoers, Trump stated, ‘I’m happy with what she did. She was very brave in doing it. I’d love her to join the Republican Party, actually. I think that could happen.’ He also suggested that El-Sayed, whom he called a ‘jihadist,’ would require special security measures, including a ‘special metal detector.’

Stevens shocked both Democrats and Republicans when she withdrew her endorsement of El-Sayed, stating that she did not belong on his campaign. ‘That’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United State Senate today. I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign,’ she said. Stevens also criticized El-Sayed for his rhetoric against Israel and accused him of promoting ‘antisemitic hate.’

Tension between Stevens and El-Sayed had been rising since their close primary race. El-Sayed’s campaign reportedly told Stevens to stay away from his remaining campaign events after she called on him to ‘denounce antisemitic hate.’ Stevens’ fiancé, who is Jewish, also announced his support for Rogers, further signaling a shift in her political stance.

Trump’s invitation to Stevens followed a positive statement he posted on Truth Social, calling her a ‘Highly Respected Democrat’ with support from across Michigan, especially among African American and Jewish voters. ‘It’s a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!’ he wrote.

Stevens’ decision to endorse Rogers marks a significant shift in the Michigan Senate race, where both Democrats and Republicans are vying for control. The endorsement has sparked renewed debate over the role of race, religion, and party loyalty in political campaigns.
