Vice President JD Vance has stated that the results of the upcoming midterm elections could provide critical insights into his potential 2028 presidential bid. Speaking to NBC News on Thursday, Vance emphasized that the midterms will offer new information that could influence his decision on whether to run for the presidency in 2028. He also highlighted the importance of focusing on the Republican Party’s campaign efforts for the current election cycle.
Midterm Challenges and GOP Optimism
Vance acknowledged the uphill battle the Republican Party faces in the midterms, noting that historically, the party in power tends to experience a decline in electoral fortunes during these elections. However, he expressed cautious optimism about the GOP’s prospects, stating that there is a sense that the political landscape is shifting in their favor.
“Historically there’s always a bit of an uphill climb, and I think you definitely sense that,” Vance said. “I also think you can sense a sense of cautious optimism, in the sense that, you know, people feel like the numbers are sort of moving, maybe in our direction.”
Vance also mentioned the broader challenges faced by the party, noting that it is generally difficult to win a midterm election when the party controls the White House, the Senate, and the House. He reiterated that the current political climate is challenging, but there is a growing recognition of the party’s efforts to address the issues left by the previous Democratic administration.
Supporting GOP Candidates
While traveling aboard Air Force Two, returning from a campaign stop in Lakeland, Florida, Vance was actively supporting Republican candidates. There, he campaigned for U.S. Senator Ashley Moody, who is running in a special election to complete the remainder of Marco Rubio’s term, and Representative Byron Donalds, the Republican nominee seeking to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis.
Vance outlined his strategy for supporting GOP candidates, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the party’s victories and reminding voters of the ineffective policies they witnessed under the previous Democratic administration. He also warned against pretending that everything is perfect, as voters tend to blame the party in power for the country’s current issues.
“Voters are impatient, right? They ultimately make the decision,” Vance said. “We have to make the argument as best as we can. And what I honestly think is that we inherited a remarkably tough situation. … But I think that our approach is to brag about the victories, talk about the great accomplishments.”
Vance also expressed confidence that the message of the GOP is starting to resonate with voters, as he believes people are recognizing the party’s efforts to solve problems created by the previous administration. He added that the message is gaining traction, especially with the perception that Democrats are running a lot of “crazy people.”
2028 Presidential Ambitions
When asked about his potential 2028 presidential ambitions, Vance did not commit to a bid, stating that he would not make any announcements until after the midterm elections, which remain his top priority. He emphasized that he is focused on the current campaign and will not speculate too much on hypotheticals.
“Right now, I try not to think too much in hypotheticals,” he said. “I’m just going to try to do as well as I can and encourage people to elect the candidates that I think are good. The American people make that decision, and when they do, then yeah, I’ll have some new information to consider.”
Vance also addressed the potential for competition from other Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who has positioned himself as a potential rival in recent weeks. He admitted that Cruz is currently running for president but stated that he is not at this moment, focusing instead on helping elect Republicans.
“It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president,” Vance added. “At this moment, I’m not. I’m trying to help elect Republicans. That’s what I’m going to keep on doing.”
Upcoming Election and Future Plans
Vance acknowledged that the next 35 days will be crucial in determining the GOP’s success in the midterms. He emphasized that the results of these elections will provide new information that will be essential in making decisions about his future political path.
“You make these decisions by collecting as much information and trying to make a wise decision,” he said. “And yeah, I mean, regardless of what happens over the next 35 days, there will be new information, new things you have to make a decision over.”
As the midterm elections approach, Vance and other GOP leaders are intensifying their efforts to secure victories at all levels of government. With the focus on the current election, the outcome of the midterms will play a significant role in shaping the political landscape and influencing future presidential ambitions, including Vance’s potential 2028 bid.
