West Hollywood has become the first city in California to legally recognize polyamorous relationships, allowing individuals in throuples and larger groups to register their partnerships under new city ordinances. The measure, approved unanimously by the city council on Monday, will take effect on December 2 and provides legal recognition and protections for relationships involving three or more adults.

Legal Protections and Registration Details

Registered partners will receive visitation rights at health care facilities and jails within the city’s jurisdiction, subject to certain restrictions. The ordinance also extends rental protections to registered partners, including safeguards against eviction for adding a partner to a household. To qualify, participants must be at least 18, consent to the relationship, share life’s necessities, and accept responsibility for one another’s welfare. They cannot be closely related in a way that would bar them from marrying or entering a domestic partnership under California law. People living outside the city’s limits can also register.

Background and Advocacy

The idea for the measure was first brought to West Hollywood Councilmember Chelsea Lee Byers in early 2025 by Christina Fialho, founder of the bisexual advocacy organization Rewrite the BiLine. Fialho emphasized that the law is “just the beginning,” stating it makes it possible for people to dream about a future they once thought was out of reach. She also noted that cities are realizing families come in many forms and should protect, not police those relationships.

Building on Existing Ordinances

The new measure builds on an ordinance passed in March that bars discrimination based on “family or relationship structure.” At that time, Byers called the law “frankly long overdue.” The new registration system for polyamorous relationships follows similar laws passed in two Massachusetts cities, Somerville and Cambridge, which also allow polyamorous partnerships to register with the city.

Impact and Future Implications

The approval of this ordinance marks a significant shift in how local governments approach non-traditional relationships, offering legal protections and rights to those who have long faced discrimination. As more cities consider similar measures, the precedent set by West Hollywood could influence broader legal and social conversations about relationship diversity and individual rights.
