The White House has released a report estimating that immigration policies backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) would cost American taxpayers up to $613 billion over the next decade. The Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) report, detailed Thursday, outlines a range of $440 billion to $613 billion in projected costs, with the estimate based on assigning each illegal immigrant a lifetime fiscal cost of $166,716.
Cost Breakdown and Fiscal Impact
According to the report, the total cost of legalizing all current illegal immigrants, including benefits such as food stamps, federal housing assistance, and Medicaid, would amount to between $1.4 trillion and $1.9 trillion over the next decade. The bulk of these costs are attributed to benefits, with Medicaid alone expected to cost up to $40 billion annually. Food stamps and housing assistance add between $3.6 billion to $4.7 billion and $2.3 billion to $3 billion annually, respectively.
The report also estimates that unwinding the current enforcement crackdown would eliminate $227 billion to $287 billion in projected taxpayer savings. Subtracting the costs of enforcement, the net ten-year cost of the DSA immigration plan is estimated to be between $79 billion and $139 billion.
Broader Policy Impacts
In addition to the immigration plan, the report assesses eight other policy pillars attributed to the DSA, including Medicare for All, universal rent control, the Green New Deal, a 32-hour workweek, and a billionaire wealth tax. The total net cost of these policies over ten years is estimated at roughly $49 trillion, or about $355,000 per American household. Seven of the eight policies could be scored against the federal budget, while the eighth—abolishing the police and prison system—was measured by its effect on crime.
Administration Response
A White House spokeswoman, Lauren Bis, stated that President Donald Trump had provided ICE with the resources to deport criminal illegal aliens, and that radical Democrats now seek to reopen the border and extend amnesty to those released. The administration claims it has gone 16 consecutive months without releasing illegal immigrants at the southern border.
The report is being released just weeks before the midterm elections, with socialist candidates on ballots in several states, including Colorado’s First Congressional District. Fox News Digital noted it had contacted the DSA for comment on the costs tied to its immigration platform.
