WASHINGTON — The White House has taken action to address widespread fraud in government healthcare programs, targeting individuals who received benefits from both Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare. The move, announced by the White House Fraud Task Force, involves canceling subsidies for 189,000 people who were enrolled in duplicate coverage, saving over $1.5 billion annually in taxpayer funds.

Ending Duplicate Enrollment

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has initiated a review of enrollments, identifying those who received benefits from multiple programs. The administration claims that during the Biden era, the verification process for duplicate enrollment was paused, leading to a backlog of hundreds of thousands of cases. This lack of oversight allowed many to receive benefits they were not entitled to.

Under the Trump administration, the Periodic Data Matching process was resumed, uncovering significant fraud. Officials reported that the Trump team identified over 551,000 instances of duplicate enrollment and saved nearly $4.4 billion in 2025 through these efforts. The current initiative aims to continue this trend, ensuring that only eligible individuals receive subsidies.

Process and Protections

CMS has implemented a rigorous process to handle the cancellation of duplicate coverage. If an individual’s records suggest duplicate enrollment, CMS contacts them and gives 30 days to respond. If they fail to confirm or deny the duplicate coverage, their subsidies may be canceled. For deceased individuals, a similar protocol is applied to ensure no benefits are paid to those who are no longer alive.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, CMS Administrator, criticized the Biden administration for its lack of oversight, stating that the pause in verification created significant issues. He emphasized the importance of program integrity and the need to ensure that taxpayer funds are used efficiently and wisely.

Fraud Schemes and Enforcement

Fraudulent dual enrollment often occurs when individuals lie about their income to qualify for low-cost private insurance alongside government healthcare. Insurance brokers have also been implicated in stealing personal information to enroll individuals without their knowledge. The fraud task force has taken action against 750,000 fraudulent Obamacare enrollments, including crackdowns on insurance brokers and agents suspected of abuse.

Vice President JD Vance highlighted the importance of verifying eligibility, stating that the administration is ensuring that only those who qualify receive subsidies. He noted that prior to these efforts, the verification process was lacking, leading to widespread fraud and misuse of taxpayer funds.
