Wikipedia Traffic Dips as AI Reduces Site Visits
Wikimedia CEO warns of declining traffic and concerns over AI’s impact on Wikipedia’s role in the tech landscape.

Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan has expressed concerns over the decline in web traffic to the left-leaning Wikipedia, attributing it to the growing influence of AI systems that are increasingly providing information without directing users to the site. Meehan described Wikipedia as the ‘backbone’ of AI systems, emphasizing its critical role in training generative models.
According to Meehan, Wikipedia’s page views have dropped by eight percent in the latest year, a decline she acknowledged as expected but not without concern. She noted that AI models rely heavily on Wikipedia’s extensive human-written content, yet some companies are reusing this data without compensating the organization, posing a financial risk to the nonprofit.
Wikimedia generates 10 percent of its operating expenses from payments from major commercial users, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Perplexity. However, prominent AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are not listed among its enterprise customers, raising questions about their data usage practices. Meehan declined to name other undisclosed corporate partners.
Revenue from small donations, which account for 80 percent of Wikimedia’s operating budget, is also at risk as fewer people visit the site. With fewer readers, the number of potential editors is expected to decline, which could slow the growth and maintenance of the community-driven encyclopedia.
Wikipedia has long faced criticism for its perceived left-wing bias, with recent examples including the controversial treatment of feminists like J.K. Rowling, who were labeled ‘exclusionary’ for their views on gender identity. As AI continues to reshape how information is consumed, the future of Wikipedia’s role in the digital landscape remains uncertain.
