JoCasta Zamarripa, the Democratic nominee for Wisconsin secretary of state, has made obtaining driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants her top priority, according to recent interviews. Zamarripa, a former state legislator and current member of the Milwaukee Common Council, emphasized this stance during an interview with WMTV’s Vanessa Kjeldsen. She stated, “My number one priority is to see the governor sign driver’s licenses for undocumented Wisconsinites into law. And I hope that that governor will be David Crowley.”
Support for Licensing Undocumented Immigrants
David Crowley, the current executive of Milwaukee County and the Democratic nominee for governor, has also expressed support for licensing undocumented immigrants. He secured the Democratic nomination in a closely contested August primary. Zamarripa noted that driver’s licenses for undocumented individuals would enhance public safety for all Wisconsinites, regardless of their immigration status.
Zamarripa has long advocated for this cause. In 2015, she sponsored a bill in the Wisconsin Assembly that aimed to provide driver’s licenses to thousands of immigrants lacking a Social Security number. She described the initiative as an economic development and public safety measure, highlighting the contributions of Latino and immigrant communities to the local economy.
Current Election Landscape
Zamarripa is running against Republican nominee Jay Schroeder, a former member of the Menomonie City Council and the Town of Menasha board, in the November 3 election. The race is shaping up as a key contest in the state’s political landscape, with both candidates presenting distinct visions for Wisconsin’s future.
Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia allow individuals to obtain driver’s licenses without proof of legal status in the U.S. This policy reflects a growing trend across the nation, with advocates arguing that it promotes economic integration and public safety.
