WNBA Star Defies Media Attacks, Stands Firm for Women’s Sports
WNBA guard Sophie Cunningham responds to liberal media criticism with defiance, defending her stance on women’s athletics.

WNBA standout Sophie Cunningham is refusing to let liberal media attacks affect her, standing firm in her beliefs about women’s sports. After The Athletic, a sports outlet of The New York Times, called for the Indiana Fever to drop Cunningham, the guard bluntly told her critics to ‘suck it’ on her ‘No Hesitation’ podcast.
‘I literally do not care what anyone says about me anymore,’ Cunningham said. ‘If you’re going to live by the praise, you’ll die by the hate. The majority of these people have never picked up a ball in their entire lives, and they’re just thirsty to have attention or be relevant.’
Cunningham continued, ‘No matter what anyone says to me, I’m going to continue to do me. I know what I bring to the table — it’s not always in the stat sheet, so for you to say I’m not effective, or anything like that? Whatever, suck it.’
Op-Ed Calls for Cunningham to Be Dropped
An op-ed for The Athletic published on October 6 called for the Fever to dump Cunningham over her views on women’s sports, complaining that she had ‘introduced new divisions’ and declaring that ‘Cunningham has to go’ if the team wanted to focus on basketball. The piece also dismissed Cunningham’s massive appeal to fans and argued that the guard is ‘not nearly worth the trouble.’
Stance on Transgender Athletes
Cunningham has become a frequent target of the Left since she stood up for girls and women’s athletics, telling Sports Illustrated in July that biological males should not be permitted in female sports — a position that most of the country supports.
‘I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,’ she told ESPN at the time. ‘And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.’
Only WNBA Player to Take Public Stand
Ironically, Cunningham is the only WNBA player to take a strong, public stand for female athletics. Despite a lack of support from the league and other players, Cunningham refuses to back down from her position. Earlier this month, she wore a hat that emphasized her position: the front of the cap had ‘WOMAN’ in bold letters, while the side of the cap read ‘No Cis, Just…’
Fan Support and Popularity
The Missouri native is being rewarded with an outpouring of fan support. Cunningham’s signature shoes sold out the day they debuted. She has been greeted by crowds of fans seeking autographs and photos, including young girls eager to meet the Fever star. At a youth basketball camp in Indiana, hundreds of children lined up to take pictures with her, many requesting her now-viral signature pointing pose.
