Disneyland is set to replace its iconic gas-powered Autopia ride with electric vehicles, marking the end of an era for a beloved attraction that has been a staple since 1955. The decision comes after a violation from the California Air Resources Board prompted the company to electrify the ride, with a $56,250 settlement and a plan to retire the gas-engine fleet by early 2027.

A Nostalgic Ride with a Gas-Powered Past

The Autopia ride, located in Tomorrowland, has been a symbol of American car culture for decades. It features cars powered by 8.5 horsepower Honda four-stroke engines, similar to those used in generators and pressure washers. These engines provided the distinctive sound and smell that many visitors associated with the experience.

Visitors and Designers React to the Change

Peter Menotti, a Disney fan who built a replica of the cars, expressed disappointment over the transition to electric vehicles. He described the gas-powered cars as a source of nostalgia and empowerment for children, saying the absence of the gas smell and engine noise would diminish the magic of the ride.

On the other hand, the original designer of the Autopia cars, Bob Gurr, supported the move, calling the gas-powered attraction the ‘dirtiest place on Earth.’ Despite Disney’s request for him to stop public commentary, Gurr continued to voice his support for the change, echoing his previous statements from 2024.

Disney’s Commitment to Modernization

Disney has emphasized its commitment to sustainability and modernization, stating that the shift to electric vehicles aligns with industry trends. A spokesperson noted that the ride has been a favorite among young visitors since its opening in 1955 and that the company is evaluating technology to enable the transition to electric power.

The decision to electrify the Autopia ride reflects broader efforts in the entertainment industry to adopt greener technologies while balancing the need to preserve the magic and nostalgia that have long defined the Disneyland experience.
