A 28-year-old fisherman in Astoria, Oregon, was saved after using his iPhone’s Siri voice assistant to call emergency services, according to recent reports. Joe Little, who was fishing alone at the Hammond Marina jetty, was trapped under a massive boulder and faced a life-threatening situation.
Trapped Under a Boulder
Little was fishing in the early morning when a rock tumbled and pinned him beneath it. His grandmother, Kelly Simonson, recounted the incident, saying, “He said he felt it start to move and tried to stop it, but the boulder was too big, and he slipped down and it went over him.” The situation was dire, with Little trapped under the boulder near the high tide line.
Siri to the Rescue
Knowing he needed to contact help quickly before he drowned, Little used his Bluetooth headphones to activate Siri and call 911 around 7 a.m. His mother, Mindy Little, described the moment, stating, “He was able to get Siri to contact first responders.” The call led to a coordinated rescue effort involving multiple agencies.
Rescue Operation
Warrenton Police Department Sgt. Dylan McCoy explained that officers used car horns to locate Little, asking him if the sound was getting closer. A drone was then deployed to find him, revealing he was crushed under the boulder with only his upper body and feet visible. Firefighters carefully maneuvered the boulder to free Little, who was eventually extracted by the U.S. Coast Guard via helicopter.
Medical Recovery
Little is currently recovering at a hospital in Portland and is scheduled for an 8-hour facial reconstruction surgery. His mother described his injuries, saying, “His face got smashed. Heβs almost unrecognizable.” Despite the severity of his injuries, Little’s family expressed gratitude for his survival, calling it a miracle.
Community and Emergency Response
The incident highlights the importance of quick thinking and the role of technology in emergency situations. Little’s ability to use Siri to call 911 was crucial in ensuring his survival. The coordinated efforts of the police, fire department, and Coast Guard were essential in rescuing him from the dangerous situation.
