NASA’s Crew-12 astronauts successfully returned to Earth after 237 days in space, concluding a mission that included extensive research and maintenance on the International Space Station. The four-person crew, comprising mission commander Jessica Meir and pilot Jack Hathaway of NASA, along with mission specialists Sophie Adenot from the European Space Agency and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev from Roscosmos, splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after a dramatic re-entry.
Successful Return and Mission Highlights
The crew’s return was delayed by three weeks to complete necessary repairs on their capsule. As the spacecraft broke orbit, it traveled at an incredible speed of 17,500 mph, enduring temperatures up to 3,500°F during re-entry. The capsule slowed to a few hundred miles per hour before deploying its four main parachutes, which brought it to a gentle 16 mph landing.
During their time in space, the astronauts completed a wide range of experiments, including studies on stem cells, microgravity bone loss, and crystal growth. Adenot made history by becoming the first French woman to conduct an extravehicular activity (EVA), performing crucial maintenance on the aging space station.
Legacy of the Mission
Meir expressed her excitement about returning to Earth, stating, “We are so excited to be back on planet Earth after an incredible mission on the International Space Station.” She also noted the mixed emotions the crew felt, including a deep appreciation for the views of Earth from space.
The mission marked the 20th time SpaceX has sent humans into orbit, showcasing the growing capabilities of private spaceflight. As the astronauts prepared for their return, they handed over operations to their successors, the Crew-13 team, who arrived at the space station recently to begin their six-month mission.
