According to a recent poll conducted by Ifop for French magazine Marianne, nearly half of French Muslims say they would consider leaving the country if Marine Le Pen is elected president in 2027. The survey, which included 9,600 respondents, found that 46% of Muslims would think about going into exile, with 20% stating they would definitely leave.
Concerns Over Discrimination and Religious Practices
The poll highlights growing concerns among French Muslims about potential increases in discrimination and attacks if Le Pen, leader of the National Rally party, comes to power. Over 80% of respondents expressed fear of increased discrimination, while 27% said they would hide their religious identity in daily life. Some 18% of Muslim women who wear the hijab said they would consider stopping the practice if Le Pen is elected.
Leftist Opposition Also Considers Exile
Supporters of hard-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, who is seen as a potential run-off candidate against Le Pen, also expressed a desire to leave France. The poll found that 43% of Melenchon voters would consider emigrating, with 5.5 million leftists potentially affected.
Resistance and Legal Concerns
Some leftist voters also indicated they would resist new laws they consider unjust, with 75% planning to participate in general strikes against the government. Meanwhile, the French public shows strong support for banning the burka and organizations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, with 53% opposing Muslim women wearing the veil in public and 60% supporting a ban referendum.
Political and Social Implications
The findings reflect deepening political tensions and concerns over religious freedom and national identity in France. As Le Pen’s party pushes for policies such as banning the burka, the poll underscores the polarized views within French society about the role of religion in public life and the potential for mass migration in response to political changes.
