Federal law enforcement agencies announced the results of Operation Southern Surge during a press conference in Laredo, Texas, highlighting a two-week operation that led to the seizure of over 1,600 pounds of drugs, 15 firearms, more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, and $360,000 in cash. The operation also resulted in 89 arrests, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Major Drug Seizures at Key Border Points
The operation, coordinated by the Homeland Security Task Force, involved multiple agencies including CBP, ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas. The operation took place primarily at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge, where officials reported significant drug seizures.
At the Hidalgo Port of Entry, a canine alert led to the discovery of 909 cylindrical packages of methamphetamine hidden among leeks. The drugs weighed 1,082.47 pounds and had an estimated street value of $984,063. At the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, officers used nonintrusive inspection technology to find 49.3 pounds of cocaine concealed in 20 packages.
Combating Border Threats Through Collaboration
Jennifer De La O, Laredo Field Office Director, emphasized the importance of the operation in dismantling trafficking infrastructure and intercepting illicit supply chains. She stated that the task force’s efforts are critical to protecting national security and public safety.
Charles Kerby, HSI Laredo Acting Deputy Special Agent in Charge, highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to border security, stressing the importance of identifying and dismantling criminal networks. He noted that the Homeland Security Task Force is a whole-of-government partnership aimed at combating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling networks.
Broader Impact on National Security
The task force prioritizes efforts to combat child trafficking and remove violent criminal aliens from the country. These operations reflect a broader strategy to secure the U.S. border and protect communities from the threats posed by international drug trafficking and organized crime.
