A healthy baby girl was safely surrendered to a Safe Haven Baby Box in Racine, Wisconsin, on Sunday, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. at Racine Fire Station 4, located at 3829 Washington Ave., according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel swiftly assessed and cared for the newborn, who was found to be in good health. The baby was later transferred to Ascension All Saints Hospital for further evaluation and is now in the custody of child protective services, where the process of identifying a permanent adoptive home will begin.

Safe Haven Baby Box: A Lifeline for At-Risk Mothers

The Racine Fire Department noted that this surrender is the second since the baby box was launched in December 2024. The department emphasized its commitment to the safety of the community, stating, “We are thankful that this parent chose a safe option and that this baby is now receiving the care and protection they deserve.” Baby boxes, designed to deter the abandonment of newborns, are temperature-controlled incubators often built into the walls of fire stations, police stations, and hospitals. These boxes allow at-risk mothers to safely and legally place their infants inside, with an alarm system alerting first responders or hospital staff after a set time.

Legal Framework and National Expansion

Wisconsin’s Safe Haven law permits the legal surrender of infants up to 30 days old to hospitals, fire stations, police stations, and baby boxes. The concept of Safe Haven Baby Boxes originated in Indiana nine years ago and has since expanded to at least 455 locations across 25 states. Over 80 newborns have been surrendered to these boxes nationwide, according to the organization. The National Safe Haven Hotline, 1-866-99BABY1, provides free counseling and information about safe surrenders, including face-to-face options, and has assisted with over 200 additional infant surrenders through its services.
