A Biden-appointed federal judge has issued an order halting the Trump administration’s efforts to threaten state and county officials over election procedures, just days before the midterm elections. U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson ruled that the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security overstepped their authority by attempting to intimidate local election workers over the handling of ballots.

Thompson Orders Federal Officials to Stop Threatening Election Workers

Thompson’s ruling, issued Friday, prohibits federal officials from using criminal threats to compel election workers to act in accordance with the Trump administration’s demands. The judge found that the administration’s actions likely violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bars attempts to intimidate or coerce individuals for assisting others in voting.

“One of the hallmarks of a fair election is the freedom to exercise the right to vote free from threat, fear, or intimidation,” Thompson wrote. “Free exercise of the right to vote is a core tenet of our democracy. It requires safeguarding to ensure full participation and public trust in our elections.”

Legal Battle Over Voter Integrity Efforts

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by election workers’ unions and civil rights groups, which challenged the Trump administration’s strategy of sending letters to all 50 states and Washington, D.C., warning of potential criminal charges for officials who allowed noncitizens to vote. In California, the dispute involved about 20,000 registered voters whose citizenship was questioned by federal authorities.

Under the court’s order, federal officials must now inform recipients of previous letters that the court has blocked the administration’s demands and threats of prosecution. They are also required to report any related warrant applications, grand jury subpoenas, or requests for election materials to the court.

Legal Precedents and Ongoing Legal Battles

The ruling follows a separate decision earlier this week in which another federal judge rejected the Justice Department’s attempt to force California to set aside ballots. A federal appeals court also denied the administration’s appeal on Friday, reinforcing the legal challenges facing the Trump administration’s election-related strategies.

Thompson’s order remains in effect through November 16, ensuring that the ruling continues to protect election workers from intimidation and coercion as the country prepares for the midterms.
