Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher took aim at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his ‘tone deaf’ comments marking the third anniversary of the October 7th massacre. During his Friday night monologue, Maher criticized the self-described democratic socialist for his remarks that gave lip service to the suffering of Israeli civilians before shifting blame to Israel for the broader conflict.

Mamdanis’ Remarks and Maher’s Response

‘Mayor Mamdani, not all that sympathetic to this stuff, but he did make some nice remarks about it,’ Maher said. ‘But then he pivoted right to, ‘but Israel made them do it.”

Maher also mocked Mamdani’s past as a rapper, noting that his stage name was ‘Tone Deaf.’ Mamdani, who previously performed under the names ‘Young Cardamom’ and ‘Mr. Cardamom,’ faced widespread criticism for his comments.

Blame and Consequences

Mamdani’s remarks attributed the majority of the blame to Israel for the ongoing conflict in the region. His statement acknowledged the pain of the October 7th massacre, where Hamas killed over 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others, before shifting to condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza. He highlighted the suffering of Palestinians, including over 74,000 killed, with more than 1,400 deaths even after the so-called ceasefire.

Mamdani also faced backlash from antisemitic protesters at an October 7th vigil in New York City, who called him a ‘traitor’ and suggested firing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who is Jewish.

Call to Action

Mamdani’s comments sparked a broader call to action, urging the refusal to accept a world where occupation and apartheid continue, and war crimes are met with impunity. His message emphasized the need to fight for a world where every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.
