Over a thousand residents of Ceuta, a Spanish North African exclave, staged a peaceful sit-in near the city’s border with Morocco on Sunday to demand solutions to the ongoing migrant crisis. The protest, organized under the slogan ‘Sit-in at the Tarajal,’ marked the second month since tens of thousands of migrants illegally entered the city in late July, causing a complex crisis that remains unresolved.

Residents Demand Security Measures

The demonstrators marched from downtown Ceuta to the Tarajal border crossing, where they laid a large banner bearing the colors of Spain’s flag and the phrase, ‘It’s not Immigration, it’s an Invasion.’ The protest aimed to express frustration over the continued presence of migrants and to demand stronger security measures, including border reinforcement to prevent future invasions.

Footage from El Faro de Ceuta showed protesters chanting, ‘Ceuta is not for sale, Ceuta is defended,’ as they expressed their outrage over the deteriorating conditions in their city. Elderly residents, unable to walk the full distance, joined the protest from their windows, reminding the demonstrators that ‘they are not alone.’

Protesters Call for Long-Term Solutions

The sit-in was part of a broader effort to continue the demands of Ceuta’s residents as the city approaches its second month since the migrant influx. The protest also included a stop at the Chorrillo esplanade, where additional protesters joined the final stretch of the march, chanting, ‘Invaders, out!’ The event highlighted the growing frustration among locals over the lack of effective solutions to the crisis.

Spain’s socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, addressed the issue during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, but rather than condemning the situation or offering solutions, he framed himself as a ‘victim’ of an international campaign against him, drawing criticism from some residents and media outlets.
