The interview marks her first media appearance since September 10, 2025, when her son was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Family Unity Amid Grief
Kathryn Kirk told Vanity Fair that she and Erika have grown closer since the tragedy, emphasizing their shared grief and unwavering support for one another. “We were 100% behind her,” Kathryn said, referring to Erika. “Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer. We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair.”
Kathryn also expressed her deep sorrow over the online attacks Erika faced following the shooting. “We were so upset to see people on social media attack Erika,” she said, adding that she could not imagine how Charlie would feel seeing such hostility.
Denial of Alleged Tensions
Some people have alleged that Charlie’s parents blamed Erika for his death and disagreed with her over the future of Turning Point USA, but Kathryn denied these claims. “That wasn’t true,” she said.
Erika’s Perspective
Erika recounted seeing her husband’s dead body at the hospital, describing the moment as “unbelievable.” “I’ll never be able to put it into words,” she said. “But Charlie had a smirk. It wasn’t sad.” She added that she thought Charlie was trying to tell her, “I just saw Jesus. I fought the good fight. I’m okay.”
Legal Proceedings and Family Statement
Kirk’s parents and Erika attended the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie. A judge recently ruled that Robinson will stand trial for Kirk’s murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
