On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “OutFront,” New York Democratic U.S. House nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier criticized New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch for not addressing the ICE shooting incident as a violation of sanctuary city policies. Chevalier argued that Tisch failed to condemn ICE’s actions and instead focused on the rap sheet of the man shot by ICE in New York.

Host Erin Burnett questioned Chevalier about the mayor’s support for Tisch and her stance on the issue. Chevalier responded by emphasizing the calls from her district for Tisch to step down, stating that she was representing the community’s demands as a Democratic nominee for Congress.

“I was honestly disgusted to hear the way that the Commissioner refused to address and condemn ICE for its actions,” Chevalier said. “She could have taken the moment to remind folks that this is a sanctuary city. But she didn’t. And instead, she chose to demonize our neighbors.”

Chevalier condemned the NYPD commissioner for not addressing the violation of sanctuary policy, whether in spirit or in letter. She criticized the lack of immediate investigation and the decision to focus on the individual’s criminal history rather than the broader implications of ICE’s actions.

“By the fact that this was not immediately investigated and addressed,” Chevalier said, “she herself could have taken the moment to condemn it, to remind folks that this is a sanctuary city. But she didn’t. And instead, she chose to demonize our neighbors, right? And tried to pretend that there is any justification for having a rogue agency act as cowboys and shoot into a crowded street and shoot into a car where there was a five-year-old child.”

The incident has sparked significant debate about the role of ICE in New York and the responsibilities of local law enforcement in upholding sanctuary city policies. As the controversy continues, the calls for Tisch to step down reflect growing tensions over how local officials handle federal immigration enforcement.
