A member of the U.S. National Guard and a suspect were both shot and injured during a late-night incident in Washington, D.C., as guardsmen attempted to break up a fight, city officials reported.
Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Jeffery W. Carroll told reporters at the scene that seven to eight members of the National Guard were in a van in the capital’s Southeast district when they noticed a fight break out. The guard members blocked the exit and stepped out of the van to intervene when the suspect pulled out a gun, Carroll said.
A National Guard member began ordering the man to put down the weapon before the suspect allegedly turned the gun toward the guardsmen, prompting three of them to open fire on the individual, the chief said. The suspect attempted to flee through the alley before being arrested by members of the National Guard.

The National Guard member was shot in the leg, while the suspect was shot in the abdomen. Both were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. It is unknown which of the three guardsmen shot the suspect.
Although the other participants in the initial fight fled, Carroll asked them to speak with police to help investigators gather more information. He added that investigators still do not know what caused the initial fight.
Sunday’s shooting took place almost a year after two members of the National Guard were shot outside the White House in November. One of the victims, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from injuries sustained during the incident.
President Donald Trump announced that he would deploy the National Guard in the capital in August 2025 in order to “help reestablish law and order and safety” after a wave of violent crime struck the city.
