The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on November 2 that more than 230 illegal migrant truck drivers were arrested during a nationwide safety crackdown known as ‘Operation Guardian.’ The operation, which took place over a 72-hour window between October 26 and October 28, targeted unsafe and unqualified drivers across 15 states.
Focus on Unqualified Commercial Drivers
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted the operation’s focus on commercial drivers who were not properly vetted or qualified to operate large vehicles. The operation resulted in the arrest of over 230 individuals, including 40 who held Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) despite not meeting legal requirements.
Mullin criticized states like California and New York for issuing CDLs to individuals who lacked proper qualifications, spoke English, or had criminal records. He stated, ‘Too many American lives have been lost because sanctuary states have issued CDLs to tens of thousands of illegal aliens who are unqualified, poorly vetted, do not speak English, and have known criminal histories.’
Cooperation with State and Local Agencies
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, which partnered in the operation, reported assisting in the arrest of migrants with outstanding felony warrants, detaining six individuals suspected of sex trafficking, and apprehending a suspect driving a stolen vehicle who assaulted police during arrest.
Officers in Indiana also participated, noting they patrolled secondary and bypass routes often used by criminals to evade law enforcement on main roads.
Restoring Law and Order
Sec. Mullin emphasized the importance of the operation in restoring law and order by removing unsafe drivers from the road. ‘Illegal alien truckers absolutely wreak havoc on actual companies that are doing it right,’ he said. ‘What we’re trying, through the DHS, our partners with state and local officials, is we are trying to restore law and order again. We’re trying to take these unsafe drivers off the road.’
