European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has announced her early resignation, stepping down on February 7, 2027, nearly nine months before her term was set to end. Lagarde, a 70-year-old former managing director of the International Monetary Fund, cited her desire for freedom of speech and expression as the reason for her departure.
Lagarde’s tenure has been marked by significant challenges, including inflation, a pandemic, and soaring energy prices. The Economist reported that bond yields have surged due to a lack of credible budget plans, with Germany’s bond yields reaching levels seen during the early 2010s euro-zone crisis.
I will be leaving the @ECB in February 2027 because I want to have the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression, and the freedom to engage on matters that are not monetary policy matters. https://t.co/fZcA7CJ4lr
During her time at the ECB, Lagarde initially resisted intervening in bond markets to close spreads for economically troubled nations. However, as financial panic threatened the eurozone, she launched a massive bond-buying program, effectively making the ECB the continent’s financial backstop.
Problems were further compounded by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which triggered an energy shock in an economy already committed to green transition goals. This forced the ECB to end negative interest rates, shifting the economic environment from chronic stagnation to runaway inflation.
The ECB reported substantial net losses in 2023 as high interest payments on commercial bank reserves exceeded returns on fixed-rate bond holdings. Despite this, the ECB has held interest rates steady, warning that rising energy prices could further drive inflation and weaken economic growth.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his deep gratitude for Lagarde, acknowledging her leadership during a period of numerous crises. He emphasized that stability is built through resolute action and a commitment to the shared future of Europe.
The European Council President, António Costa, also praised Lagarde’s leadership, noting her unwavering commitment to the European project. He stated that the process to find her successor will proceed without delay.
The Economist reported that Lagarde is in discussions to lead the World Economic Forum in Geneva.
