Former Harvard President to Teach Despite Plagiarism Scandal

Former Harvard President Claudine Gay, who resigned in 2024 after facing widespread plagiarism allegations, will teach a class on higher education at the university this fall. Gay’s return to the institution comes more than two years after she stepped down amid intense scrutiny over her academic misconduct and handling of anti-Israel protests.

Class Focuses on Academic Politics

Gay will teach multiple classes this academic year, including a course titled “What is a University?: Purpose and Politics in Higher Education.” The syllabus, obtained by The Wall Street Journal, outlines the course’s intent to encourage students to critically examine the political, social, and market pressures influencing their college experience.

The class will also explore the complexities of competing interests within universities and ask students to propose a vision for institutional reform. Readings will include discussions on Harvard’s historical ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and its history of slavery.

Controversy and Resignation

Gay served as Harvard’s president for just over six months before resigning in January 2024. Her departure followed allegations of nearly 50 instances of plagiarism across eight of her published works, as well as mounting pressure over her handling of anti-Israel protests on campus.

In a viral exchange, Gay hesitated when asked whether calling for genocide would constitute harassment. She later blamed “racial animus” for the controversy surrounding her leadership in her resignation letter.

Return to Harvard

Despite her controversial exit, Gay remained with the university in a research and teaching role. She is currently listed as a professor of government and African and African-American Studies, with most of her academic work centered on racial issues.
