Over 500 French schools remain closed as protests turn violent, with far-left groups blamed for instigating chaos.

France has closed over 500 schools as the nation braces for a new wave of violent student protests, following a series of riots that left the country in disarray. Education Minister Édouard Geffray stated that the closures are due to safety concerns, as many schools were damaged or ransacked during the recent protests.
Violent Protests and Security Concerns
According to AFP, Geffray confirmed that 24 schools across France were set on fire or ransacked during the violent demonstrations, which were incited by far-left groups. At least 78 members of the French Ministry of National Education were injured in the chaos. The minister emphasized that the closures are a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of both staff and students.
Far-Left Groups and the Protests
Paris Police reports indicate that the protests were instigated by far-left organizations such as La France Insoumise, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and the Young Revolutionary Communists. The riots left over 5,000 individuals detained, with 85% of those detained being minors under 18.
From Peaceful Protests to Violence
The student-led protests began on September 17, initially calling for better conditions and resources for French schools. However, the demonstrations quickly turned violent, leading to uncontrolled chaos in Paris and other cities. Reports of arson, vandalism, assaults on law enforcement and civilians, and blockades of school facilities have been widespread.
Government Response and Calls for More Protests
French officials have accused far-left elements of co-opting the protests and using them as a platform for violence. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced a “roadmap” to address the students’ demands, including measures to tackle teacher shortages. However, protest organizers have criticized the government for lacking concrete solutions and have called for more demonstrations on Tuesday, October 6.
Continuing Disruptions and a Lull in Activity
Despite a reported calm over the weekend, 413 educational institutions are still experiencing disruptions as of Monday noon. This represents a 27% reduction from the previous day’s figures. The French Education Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, with the potential for further unrest looming.
