France Considers ‘Riot Tax’ on Insurance to Cover Unrest Costs
French government explores adding riot-related costs to insurance bills to fund damage from recent unrest.

The French government is considering a new ‘riot tax’ that would add the cost of recent unrest to citizens’ insurance bills, according to a report. The measure, dubbed a ‘solidarity contribution,’ would increase insurance premiums for auto, business, and home policies by 0.8% starting in early 2025. The goal is to raise approximately €400 million, with a potential revenue target of €4 billion.
Damage from Unrest Reaches €1.2 Billion
The proposed tax comes amid widespread damage from recent Islamo-leftist riots, which left over 3,000 businesses impacted in a single weekend. The estimated cost of looting, arson, and other violent acts reached €1.2 billion, causing many local governments and businesses to face financial ruin.
Public Reaction to the Tax Hike
Despite the government’s efforts to shift the financial burden, public opinion remains divided. A woman on Europe1 radio criticized the plan, stating, ‘I’m in favor of making the rioters pay, not the citizens.’ A male caller echoed similar sentiments, calling the policy ‘absurd and scandalous,’ while suggesting that welfare benefits should be cut instead.
Italy and France Move Toward Holding Rioters Accountable
Italy’s conservative government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has also taken steps to ensure rioters pay for their actions. An emergency decree was issued to hold minors accountable, with financial burdens falling on their parents. Deputy PM Matteo Salvini stated, ‘He who errs pays. Because he who smashes a shop window or assaults a sales clerk is not a revolutionary: He’s a fucking idiot.’
France’s Legislative Push for Accountability
A similar bill is moving through the French legislature, with the Senate recently approving a proposal that would hold rioters financially responsible. The legislation allows for fines of up to €10,000 and the seizure of welfare or housing aid from those involved, with families held accountable for minors.
