A 93-year-old disabled woman was found dead in her home after police discovered a naked 34-year-old Sudanese man at the scene, according to prosecutors. The suspect has been placed under formal investigation for murder preceded or followed by rape, adding to France’s ongoing debate over immigration, crime, and state authority.

The Victim and the Crime

Marie-Louise, also known as “Juliette” to neighbors, had suffered a stroke and was bedridden for months. Described as a vulnerable woman who relied on others for daily tasks, her death has shocked the community. Neighbors reported hearing screams and insults from inside her home on Sunday afternoon, prompting police to investigate.

Upon arrival, officers found the front entrance locked and encountered blood before reaching the bathroom, where Marie-Louise was found naked and motionless. The suspect was found unclothed and intoxicated, with some accounts suggesting he was asleep or dazed on top of the elderly woman. Prosecutors noted he resisted arrest and injured an officer, with a later breath test registering 0.92 milligrams of alcohol per liter.

Forensic Findings and Legal Proceedings

The autopsy revealed severe injuries, including signs of sexual violence, rib fractures, spinal damage, facial bruising, and neck trauma consistent with asphyxiation. Toulouse prosecutor David Charmatz emphasized the gravity of the case, noting the extensive violence involved.

Authorities have formally placed the Sudanese national under investigation for murder with rape and requested his pretrial detention. While he remains presumed innocent, forensic and toxicological work continues to determine the full extent of the crime.

Immigration and Political Implications

The case has ignited discussions about France’s immigration policies, with sovereigntist right-wing groups like the National Rally (RN) criticizing the government’s handling of migration and security. They argue that successive governments have failed to control borders and enforce removals, leading to a surge in crime and public safety concerns.

France’s immigration numbers highlight the scale of the issue, with nearly 4.5 million foreign nationals holding valid permits in 2025, representing 8.1% of the population. The Senate has criticized the low rate of enforcement, with only 10.9% of removal orders executed during the first nine months of the year.

Political leaders like Jordan Bardella have vowed to implement stricter immigration policies, including a national referendum, abolishing birthright citizenship, and increasing deportations of foreign criminals. These proposals reflect the broader debate over national sovereignty and the role of the state in managing migration.
