Students at the lycée François-Villon in Beaugency, France, sparked outrage after a video surfaced of them performing a rap song that references a terrorist responsible for the 2012 Jewish school massacre in Toulouse and the 2015 Bataclan attack in Paris. The song, which glorifies acts of violence, has led to a preliminary investigation and the prosecution of three minors for publically endorsing terrorism.

A Sad Legacy of Tragedy

The October 1st blockade at the school was part of a nationwide wave of violent protests, with police reporting 169 blockades across France that day. The song, which includes lyrics bragging about shooting victims and evading cameras, has been widely condemned by French Jews, who view the names of the terrorists as a painful reminder of their loss.

The 2012 Attack on Toulouse

On March 19, 2012, a jihadi parked a scooter outside the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse and opened fire on the crowd. Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, 30, and his 5-year-old son Arieh were among the first to fall. Myriam Monsonégo, an 8-year-old girl, ran toward the courtyard, her ballet slippers spilling from her bag as she tried to retrieve them. The terrorist shot her in the back, then turned on 3-year-old Gabriel Sandler, and finally returned to kill Myriam at point-blank range.

Aftermath and Impact

The attack sent shockwaves through the French Jewish community. Yaacov Monsonégo, Myriam’s father, still runs the school, which has since been renamed. After the massacre, many families left for Israel, causing enrollment to drop from over 200 students to about 140. Fourteen years later, the memory of the attack has been turned into a chorus by French teenagers, raising serious concerns about the glorification of terrorism.
