Germany’s Welfare Recipients: 38% Are Foreign Nationals
AfD reveals 37.8% of long-term welfare recipients in Germany are foreign nationals, sparking debate over immigration and benefits.

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has released data indicating that nearly 38% of long-term welfare recipients are foreign nationals, raising concerns about the impact of migration on the country’s social welfare system. According to figures from the Federal Employment Agency, approximately 1.4 million people have received the so-called ‘citizen’s allowance’ for at least five years, with 37.8% of these recipients being foreign nationals.
Migration Overrepresented in Welfare Recipients
The data shows that 62.2% of those receiving the citizen’s allowance for five years or more are German citizens, while 37.8% are foreign nationals. This highlights a significant overrepresentation of migrants in the welfare system, despite the fact that only around 20% of Germany’s population consists of foreign nationals.
Experts note that the true impact of migration on the welfare program may be higher, as the figures do not account for German citizens born abroad who later naturalized. The AfD has called for reform, including requiring recipients to provide at least 15 hours of community service per week and cutting off benefits for those who fail to comply.
Crime and Arrest Warrants: Migrants Overrepresented
Separate figures obtained by the AfD show that 42.9% of all suspects in criminal cases are foreign nationals, with 87.3% of those wanted on outstanding arrest warrants being foreign nationals. These statistics, however, exclude naturalized migrants and the children of migrants, potentially underrepresenting the impact of migration on crime.
AfD MP Sebastian Münzenmaier has called for a ‘rigorous change of course,’ arguing that the government should be tougher on immigration, including immediate deportation of foreign criminals.
Political Debate Over Welfare and Migration
The data has sparked a broader political debate over the role of migration in Germany’s welfare system and the need for reform. While the AfD emphasizes the financial and social burden of migration, the government has defended the welfare program as a means of supporting those in need, regardless of their nationality.
