U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently visited the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as part of his nationwide ‘Send Me Tour,’ a military outreach initiative aimed at engaging prospective enlistees and cadets. During the event, Hegseth addressed Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets and administered the oath of enlistment to new recruits ahead of the Tennessee-Alabama football game.

‘Send Me Tour’ Focuses on Enlistment and National Service

The ‘Send Me Tour’ is a national military initiative launched by U.S. defense officials to connect with potential service members, speak to military cadets, and administer enlistment oaths. At the University of Tennessee, Hegseth emphasized the importance of national service and the role of the military in safeguarding the United States.

Hegseth spoke to both new enlistees and ROTC cadets before the football game between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. He also administered the enlistment oath to individuals joining all military service branches and the Tennessee National Guard, highlighting the significance of their service to national security.

Peace Through Strength and National Defense

In his address, Hegseth reflected on the historical role of the U.S. military, stating, ‘For 251 years, Americans raised their right hand and said, ‘send me;’ send me to fight the redcoats, send me to fight the Nazis, send me to fight the communists, send me to fight the Islamists.’ He noted that today’s service members are stepping up to defend the nation against threats to its shores, interests, and people.

Hegseth emphasized that those who serve are true peacemakers, preserving ‘peace through strength.’ He argued that the U.S. military should be recognized for its role in ensuring national security, allowing people to live freely and enjoy events like the football game.

‘If there’s one entity that should win the Nobel Peace Prize every single year, it actually should be the United States military,’ Hegseth said. ‘Peace through strength: the reason our people live free, the reason we get to play football games like this one today, are because we are stronger than any other nation in the world.’
