In a harrowing moment that has since become a story of bravery, Oregon father Kaylub Giamanco made the ultimate sacrifice to save his daughters and others during a school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on October 15. Newly released 911 audio captures Giamanco’s frantic efforts to alert authorities as he prepared to confront the armed intruder.
911 Call Reveals Giamanco’s Desperation
The 78-second recording, released by Deschutes County 911, shows Giamanco’s desperation as he tries to reach the dispatcher. He repeatedly shouts, “Oh my God, someone’s at my daughters’ school with a gun,” before insisting he is about to take action.
“I have a gun, and I will shoot them right now if I have to,” he says, showing his resolve to protect his children. The dispatcher urges him to wait for police, but Giamanco insists the shooter is already inside the building.
“This is my daughter’s school! I’m about to go kill this kid. He’s in the school!” Giamanco shouts, growing increasingly agitated. As the dispatcher attempts to gather more details, he repeatedly emphasizes that the shooter is inside and firing.
Heroic Action Saves Lives
Giamanco, a carpenter and father of two, had dropped his daughters off for school picture day earlier that morning. When he spotted the armed teenager entering the school, he quickly grabbed his legally owned handgun from his truck and followed the shooter toward the building.
He eventually entered through an open window and made his way toward the classroom where the teenager was attacking students. A teacher, Cassidy Schutz, was already struggling with the shooter when Giamanco arrived and fatally shot him, stopping the attack and saving lives.
Authorities have credited Giamanco and Schutz with helping stop the attack. The shooter, who is not being named, killed three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, along with 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Another student and a second teacher were wounded.
Emotional Aftermath and Reflection
Giamanco has described the shooting as the scariest day of his life and continues to grapple with the emotional aftermath. He has expressed regret over not arriving sooner, while emphasizing that he does not want the attention to overshadow the victims and their families.
“I do want to believe that if he had more love in his life and better parenting, that this could have been prevented,” he told Oregon Public Broadcasting.
