Iran has denied British claims that it was behind an attempted terrorist attack at a UK airbase that houses American bombers, challenging the UK government’s narrative. The Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the allegations ‘unfounded,’ urging accountability for what it described as a threat to international peace and security.
Terror Plot and UK Response
Several men allegedly in possession of explosives were arrested in late September outside RAF Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire, England. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the attack was ‘highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran,’ with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) being ‘almost certainly’ behind it. The UK, along with the United States and other allies, issued a joint statement accusing the IRGC of projecting hostile activity beyond its borders through covert networks and proxy actors.
Iran’s Response and Allegations
The Iranian foreign ministry condemned the UK’s allegations as ‘unfounded,’ emphasizing the need for the UK to be held accountable for its actions. The statement also included a video detailing alleged ‘false flag attacks’ attributed to the Israeli government. Iran’s Embassy to the UK previously denied any involvement in the plot, stating it reserves the right to take legal measures against misleading narratives.
Trump’s Comments and Suspect Releases
President Donald Trump claimed the Pentagon removed its bombers from RAF Fairford due to a ‘threat,’ stating that the people responsible ‘have themselves some big problems.’ All seven suspects arrested in connection with the attempted bombing have been released on bail.
