French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the resignation of his Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, following a weekend of violent riots across the country. Nuñez had submitted his resignation on Sunday, citing a lack of foresight in the deployment of law enforcement to contain the unrest, according to Le Monde.
Nuñez, in his resignation letter, called for a new strategy to maintain order amid the riots. However, Macron has refused to accept the resignation, stating that continuity in the leadership of law enforcement is crucial in the current context. The Élysée Palace announced on Monday morning that Nuñez will continue in his role as Interior Minister.
Loss of Control and Security Concerns
Nuñez, speaking with France Inter, confirmed he had submitted his resignation to Macron and admitted to a loss of control by police in several cities during the riots. He described Saturday as an “extremely difficult day to manage” for law enforcement, with the number of protesters far exceeding initial forecasts. Nuñez had predicted 200,000 protesters but saw over 550,000 take to the streets, leading to widespread violence and destruction.
He emphasized the need for better anticipation of such mobilizations and called for a “scaling up” of law enforcement operations to ensure such violence does not recur. Nuñez also acknowledged that the security measures in place were often disproportionate to the scale of the incidents, particularly in major cities where hundreds of stores were looted.
Impact of the Riots
The riots left over 2,400 individuals arrested and over 600 law enforcement officials and firefighters injured. Paris and other major cities were once again engulfed in chaos, with far-left protesters committing acts of arson, vandalism, and theft. The destruction of the historic Limoges City Hall building was among the most notable incidents.
President Macron addressed the riots in a Sunday night speech but did not acknowledge the role of mass migration in the unrest. Reports suggest many of the rioters are from multicultural areas like Saint-Denis, highlighting the complex social and political tensions underlying the violence.
