First Lady Melania Trump has called for a comprehensive peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, following the successful implementation of a humanitarian ceasefire in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Oleshky. During a meeting with representatives from both nations, Trump expressed hope that the temporary ceasefire could lead to a more enduring peace between the warring countries.

Humanitarian Efforts in Oleshky

Trump first learned of the dire situation in Oleshky in September, prompting her to immediately instruct her representative, Marc Beckman, to initiate efforts to repatriate 34 displaced children with their families. Ukraine and Russia acknowledged that previous ceasefire attempts had failed and agreed to engage in negotiations with Trump as the exclusive intermediary.

From October 27 to November 1, a localized ceasefire was observed in the Kherson area, allowing humanitarian groups to provide aid, including food, clean water, and medicine, and enabling residents to safely evacuate. Trump highlighted the impact of the ceasefire, stating, “Last week in Oleshky and neighboring areas of Kherson, people experienced the simple joys of life for the first time since 2022.” She noted that nearly 800 people left their homes in search of safety, loved ones, and a renewed sense of being.

International Recognition and Support

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, praised Trump’s role in coordinating the operation, calling her “a crucial leader” in the effort. Dmitriev also presented Trump with a painting from an 11-year-old child who was safely evacuated from Oleshky, which read, “I love Melania.”

Ukrainian leader David Arakhamia emphasized the importance of the mission in understanding how to maintain peace, stating that it provided both sides with an opportunity to learn “the mechanics of how to actually keep the peace when the peace comes.” He also hinted at future efforts, saying he would like to personally visit the next location.

Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets presented Trump with the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, a state award from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, recognizing her significant contributions to humanitarian efforts.

Trump shared personal letters she wrote to Russian and Ukrainian representatives, requesting that they be delivered directly to their respective heads of state.
